Rocktron Deep Blue Chorus
from Guitar One Magazine December 2004
by Michael Ross

Intro
In the ’80s, Rocktron made its bones as a producer of high-quality rack gear for guitarists. In keeping with the current trend in pedals, the folks in Michigan have turned their know-how of rack sounds to a new series of the stompboxes.

Rocktron’s pedals are housed in colorful metal casings. Despite thier extremely solid feel, the pedals are relatively light. Checken-head knobs add a retro vibe that, oddly enough, works with the high-tech casing design.

The Deep Blue Chorus is a multi-voiced chorus pedal. The Rate control adjusts the modulation speed, and the Depth knob controls the amount of modulation. A welcome Intensity control varies the overall mix of chorus added to your signal. This last control is a boon, since too much chorus can not only sound terribly dated but also muddy up rapid-fire leads.

That said, the Deep Blue Chorus offers a rich chime, along with true analog warmth.

Rocktron Deep Blue Chorus
From Guitar Player Magazine January 2005
By Terry Buddingh

Rocktron’s R&D department has apparently contracted a serious case of stompbox fever, as evidenced by the recent introduction of six new pedal designs. These affordably priced units represent Rocktron’s take on some classic effects with innovative twists and surprises added for good measure. Features include rugged extruded aluminum housings, easy-access pop-out battery compartments, AC adaptor jacks, and large, skid-proof rubber feet – and dig those miniature chicken-head knobs!

The Deep Blue is a stereo chorus built around the legendary Panasonic MN3207 1,024-stage analog bucket-brigade delay chip, and it sports Rate, Depth, and Intensity controls, dual outputs, and an LED that illuminates when the effect is activated. In Mono mode, the Deep Blue enhanced perceived dimension with a deep and lusciously liquid complexity that engulfed the room with its ever-shifting sonic presence. Through two amps, it sounded breathtakingly huge.

There’s just something undeniably compelling about the sound of a good analog chorus: the lush and fluid richness, the sense of density and space, and the distinctive warmth that’s so difficult to emulate with digital circuitry. And unlike some chorus pedals that emphasize the upper midrange and treble ranges, the Deep Blue’s chorusing is remarkably balanced with no low-end roll off – which further contributes to its sense of fullness. If you like your chorus fat and juicy, the Deep Blue is for you.

The Rocktron Story
The concept behind Rocktron has always been to deliver quality sound to the guitar player through exciting and often very innovating products. Many of the Rocktron products seek to marry a vintage style to modern technology and bear the mark of actual longtime musicians who understand and appreciate the needs of guitar players and then design and develop products accordingly.Rocktron launched in 1983 when founder, Bob Waller, along with co-hort Jim Chowning and others stepped back from a long musical career that included stints on the Hollywood club circuit and the Detroit to Toronto circuit. Using their background from years of club and concert appearances with their rock bands (The Blame, and originally Wildwood), the boys decided to launch a company aimed at producing top quality signal processing, amplification and effects.Rocktron’s first hit product was the HUSH® noise reduction lineup. The HUSH technology was the first single-ended noise reduction designed specifically for guitar. Over twenty years later, HUSH stands as the industry standard and has been used by an amazing plethora of guitar greats spanning 80s rockers to today’s extreme metal. To list the famous users of this outstanding noise reduction technology would require pages and pages of names. In fact, over the years Rocktron products of all types have been used by professional guitarists. A small sampling of those include Dave Mustaine, Brian May, Diamond Darrell, George Lynch, Prince, Neil Schon, Slash, Steve Stevens, Eddie Van Halen, John Petrucci, Viv Campbell, Steve Vai, Gary Moore, Gary Hoey. The list of bands that have used Rocktron products include Disturbed, Lamb of God, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Papa Roach, Black Sabbath, Queen, Taproot, Pearl Jam, U2, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, and the Deftones. Again, this is just a small sampling of the long list of professionals who have taken Rocktron products on the road and into the studio.Innovation is often the name of the game, and Rocktron has a history of many “firsts”.In 1984 the company introduced the first compressors, preamps, enhancers, effects and controllers with built-in noise reduction, along with the first footswitchable rack mount compressors. 1985 saw the introduction of the first touch-sensitive, digitally-controlled multi-effects preamp. In ’89 Rocktron provided the first factory-produced Bradshaw switchers.Innovation continued into the 1990s as Rocktron became the first ever electronics company to bring to market preamps that included Artist presets as the ProGap provided presets from Steve Lukather and Allan Holdsworth. In ’92 we introduced the first 24 bit DSP effects processor with the Intellifex. This was followed by the first preamps with on-board speaker simulation, the first DSP processor based on analog stomp box sounds, the first digital effects processors with no annoying “drop-outs”, and the first digital noise reduction. We also brought to market the first power amps with “reactance” and definition. What followed was a stunning array of products that have lasting fame in the industry. Just a few of these famous mind blowers include the Piranha, the VooDu Valve, the Chameleon, the Velocity power amps, the Replifex, the PatchMate, and the All Access. While some of these are still manufactured today, those that are not are sought after on the vintage markets. Some long discontinued items are still craved by guitar players and snapped up on re-sale web sites.Today we continue the progress with exciting products such as the Banshee 2 Talk Box, the Utopia Series of floor processors, the Cyborg Digital stompboxes, the Vendetta and Velocity amplifier lines, and the flagship Prophesy preamps.
Bob Waller (left), and Herman Li of Dragonforce
In the year 2000, Rocktron was sold to GHS Corporation, famous for its GHS Strings (including Boomers). The move was a short one, a mere 100 miles from the northern suburbs of Detroit to Battle Creek, Michigan. Bob Waller remains the division President/General Manager and thus the brand is still under the care and guidance of an original founder. Jim Chowning continues to serve music retailers in both technical support and sales roles. Longtime Rocktron staff, including Greg Orred and Robert Pascoe, remain with Rocktron in key roles. While the manufacturing is no longer done in the USA, the design and development aspects continue to come from Michigan.

Key engineering moved with the company as it folded into the GHS umbrella and Rocktron remains a brand developed and designed by American musicians. Product is now cost-effectively manufactured offshore under strict Rocktron requirements. We know guitar players of all types will continue to choose Rocktron for their tone, effects and control needs. We strive to further push the tremendous range of products that will enhance and enrich your lives. We understand that Rocktron users are often loyal to the brand, using multiple Rocktron items in their live and studio setups, and they proudly let others know their allegiance to the world’s best brand of electronics for guitarists.
We love what we do here, and it shows in our product offerings. Part sonic “black magic”, part electronic innovation and technology, Rocktron will continue to please you with great sound.

VooDu Valve LTD

Rocktron re-releases the Legendary DSP Professional Tube Guitar Preamp in a limited edition version!

Buy Online

The VooDu Valve LTD is a 24 bit DSP professional tube guitar preamp providing 12 unparalleled effect algorithms and superb sound quality never before heard from a digital tube guitar preamp. Complete programmability and full MIDI implementation are coupled with a user friendly operating format to ensure that designing unique and useful preset sounds is as simple as possible. In addition, the VooDu Valve LTD also features: Advanced Speaker Simluation provides a strikingly realistic approximation of a miked speaker cabinet at line-level for direct mixer input or headphone listening. Full parametric Pre and Post EQ gives the user complete EQ control over each preset. HUSH Noise Reduction provides noise reduction while playing and complete silence when not. “Variac” Simulation, like a conventional Variac, adjusts the level at which the preamp begins to distort. This provides more gain in high-gain applications, and allows for full-bodied cleaner presets which just begin to distort when the strings are attacked harder. Internal Wah-Wah allows the player to use an expression pedal for Wah-Wah effects instead of running long audio cables out to a conventional Wah-Wah pedal. High-quality Digital Effects, including:ReverbPitch ShiftingPhasingCompressionTremoloChorusFlangingDelayXLR Outputs for direct mixer input.

Hex Expression/Volume Pedal
For years, guitar players have asked Rocktron to recommend volume pedals and expression pedals. Now, Rocktron answers with our own, very affordable, yet professional pedal!

Buy Online

The Hex Expression/Volume Pedal is a multi-function, high-impedance (250K ohm) pedal that can be used both as a volume pedal (with smooth volume transitions) and as an expression pedal that works with a large variety of processors and MIDI controllable equipment. The design of the pedal allows you to use a simple stereo to stereo cable for expression connection, minimizing cable use on stage. An adjustable rocker tension screw allows you to adjust the pedal action for a lighter or heavier “touch”.The expression jack accepts a 1⁄4″ stereo RTS cable and lets you plug into the expression port in your MIDI footcontroller or your expression port in your MIDI controllable device and thus operate the HEX as a MIDI expression pedal.Use the input and output jacks to function as a standard volume pedal. The output jack accepts a standard guitar cable and lets you plug the HEX output into the next effect in your effect chain or directly into the input of your guitar amplifier.
